
Old hotel building union artist- mansion municipal stewardship - current City Hall





According to the newspaper '' Aurora Bage '' there was in this place in the 19th century, a building where the Hotel Union Artist, owned by Julius Atayde. According to Cláudio Lion Lemieszek, the history of construction of the Intendencia building began on February 16, 1898, when it was public notice calling competitors for the presentation of the project was ended on April 15, when two proposals were presented: a architect Giuseppe Grisolf and another of Alexander Courtade. Both were rejected for not having the conditions of the tender, which forced the opening of new competition and was chosen this time the project engineer Ricardo Coe. The winning plan aligned perfectly to the required notice: a hall for the City Council and Public Works, at room and Quartermaster Office, Library, Secretariat of the Sub Intendant, accommodation for the Municipal Guard, two prisons and other small parts necessary to operation of the Quartermaster. The plan provided for the construction of a building of two floors, containing 14 openings for the front, front to the square, and 12 openings for General Netto (current Juvêncio Lemos); the Hall of Honor would 230m². As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning some conditions imposed by the competition notice, '' the contractor is obliged to use good quality materials in the opinion of the Quartermaster engineer (Antônio Augusto Machado), and only accepts wood Act and dry. On 1 January, the cornerstone was laid, originated by the committee composed of: Messrs. John Lucas de Lima, Anaurelino Correa de Barros, Adauto Loureiro Pedro Romeiro Son and Julius Brissac. The building was built in the Municipal Administration of Major José Octavio Gonçalves and opened on 24 February 1900. (... so far the Municipal Government held the old building located in Conde de Porto Alegre Amazonas Baron corner, which had acquired on April 23, 1849). After the opening ceremony, a popular committee, represented by Captain Idálio Fields of Light made delivery to the City Council as proof of recognition of Bage of people from an oil painting of Intendant Jose Octavio, requesting that it be placed in the Hall honor of the new building. The work was estimated at 112 stories and 867 000 reis. The ground floor of, south side, for many years served as a jail. At the top, in the Main Hall, ran the City Council. The main door is not original; to that found at the site was donated by Dr. Roberto Magalhaes Sune (from Uruguay), and the old door was retrofitted inside the building.
